SENSORY INTERVENTIONS AND SUPPORT
Does Ash Therapy Complete Sensory Assessments?
At Ash Therapy we complete sensory assessments with clients as part of their overall treatment plan, rather than as a one-off service. This ensures that sensory insights are applied meaningfully and integrated into therapy, rather than sitting in isolation.
In session, Alison draws on a range of therapeutic modalities and has a particular interest in integrating sensory-based approaches and sensory modulation to support mental health and daily functioning. Using sensory strategies, in conjunction with psychotherapy (talk therapy) where appropriate helps to understand how your nervous system responds to stress, emotions, and everyday challenges, and allows the development of practical tools to regulate arousal, improve focus, and manage overwhelm.
These approaches are particularly helpful for neurodivergent clients or those experiencing anxiety, trauma, or hormonal changes, providing hands-on, practical strategies that complement talk therapy and support wellbeing across both mind and body.
Why sensory approaches work best in conjunction with psychotherapy (targeted psychological strategies):
Sensory assessments and interventions are powerful tools, but on their own they are rarely enough to create lasting change. Sensory strategies can help regulate the nervous system — easing overwhelm, improving focus, and creating a sense of safety in the moment. However, without also addressing the thought patterns, emotions, and life experiences that contribute to distress, these benefits may be temporary.
That’s why I integrate sensory-based approaches with psychotherapy. Together, they work on both levels:
The body — calming and regulating the nervous system.
The mind — exploring experiences, building insight, and developing long-term coping strategies.
This combined approach supports both immediate relief and sustainable change, helping clients not just manage symptoms but build resilience and wellbeing across all areas of life.
Why does Ash Therapy not do one off sensory assessments?
A one-off sensory assessment is not sufficient because sensory processing is a complex, individualised experience that changes over time and across environments. A single assessment provides only a snapshot, failing to capture how sensory needs impact daily life or how they may change with different interventions, contexts, or over the long term. Although having a greater understanding of your sensory profile can support improved focus, overall well-being and participation in life, these patterns can change in different environments, particularly when a person has experienced trauma. Repeated or longitudinal assessment, observation in natural settings, and linking sensory information to functional outcomes are necessary for understanding and addressing an individual's unique sensory profile and developing effective strategies.
